Welcome to K.I.S.S.I.T.! My name is Billy Lonas, and this is my first blog of many to come … “Is God Real?”… is the question I want to delve into today.
I want to thank you for visiting my blog and hope you will find it interesting. I promise to do what K.I.S.S.I.T. stands for—keeping it scripturally simple in truth. I will be using the bible to explain every topic we discuss here. I will use a bible I have had for forty-two years, The New World Translation. Poor thing is so marked up, I think more than half of it is underlined.
Many people will say to me: “Well, the bible was written by men and there are so many different versions that it can’t be the word of God.” I can’t deny any of that. But if there is a God, would He not have made sure the message always held true no matter what translation people use?
Let me explain. I see a sentence as a sandwich. The breads are the words, but the meaning contained within the words is the meat. So the different translations are just different types of bread. But if there is a God, the message or the meat between the bread will always be the same. As I quote from my bible, go check to see what your bible says, I think that you will agree, they mean the same thing. Here we go, sit back and enjoy.
Again, the question: “Is God Real?”, will be our first discussion.
Haven’t you ever asked that question? Why should you believe in God? People will tell you that all you have to do is have faith and believe. First, let’s talk about believing in God. Is it enough to just believe in God? Let’s find out what the bible says in James 2 verse 19:
“Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.” King James Version.
So, belief in God according to the bible, is not enough. It only means we have something in common with the demons and they tremble with fear.
Next, let’s discuss faith. Dictionary.com meaning number one of the word faith is: “confidence or trust in a person or a thing.” I’ve heard people say: “You have to have blind faith in God to be saved.” If faith is confidence or trust, then that confidence or trust must be earned.
Verse 20 after 19 in James 2 says: “But do you care to know, O empty man, that faith apart from works is inactive.” Again, just to say you have blind faith in God according to the bible, is not enough.
So I’m going to use the bible to help show through His works why I chose to believe in God.
People ask me: “How can you believe in something that you can’t see?” I ask them: “Can you see the wind? Can you see gravity? Can you see centrifugal force? Can you see love, joy, understanding, compassion, empathy, hate, revenge or any other emotions you may think of? Of course not, but it doesn’t mean they are not real. Why? Because we can see the effects of all these unseen things.
So … is God real?
You will have to decide for yourselves if you want to believe is God real. I am not here to tell you what decisions you should make – that right belongs to you. The question: Is God Real, I believe, has probably been asked for thousands of years, by just about everyone who has ever lived. After all there are many gods. 1 Corinthians 8:5&6 says: “For even though there are those who are called “gods,” whether in heaven or earth, just as there are many “gods and many “lords,” there is actually to us one God the Father, out of whom all things are, and we for Him; and there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are, and we through him.”
Notice it says, “on heaven and on earth”. That means there are a lot of gods competing for your interest. Meridian webster.com definition for god number three says, “A person or a thing of supreme value.” That means that just about anything on heaven or earth, depending on what has supreme value in our lives, could be our god.
But we are searching for proof of a supreme being, the creator of all things seen and unseen. Romans 1:20 states: “For His invisible [qualities] are clearly seen from the world’s creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made, even his eternal power and Godship.”
Remember, we’re searching for works or effects of God for the evidence of His existence. If we look at things on earth and in the heavens, most of us will agree there exists something more intelligent than man.
There would be no life on earth if the sun were farther away from us or closer to us. If the earth did not tilt the proper way on its axis there would be no seasons, which means we couldn’t grow food. If the moon did not orbit around the earth, there would be no life on earth or in the oceans. “An orbit on earth’s equator travels about 24,901 miles per day around the planet’s circumference,” according to geologist Seth Kardash, at the Daily News.com.
If the earth didn’t spin at the rate it does, how would life on earth change? If there were no gravity we could not stay on this planet. All the components that go into making the earth habitual for humans and all things living here, in my option, show intelligent design. We travel to the moon and beyond, all based on laws that were here way before we had the technology to do them. And we all know laws just don’t happen from nothing. They are made by some kind of intelligent being(s).
Some people think that all those things just came about on their own. I live in a house, but it did not build itself. All the creative details in our homes that we never see allow us to live in comfort. The earth is a home for all living things and we are all connected. These details are for me prove, that it did not build itself … they had an intelligent designer.
Let’s move on to what we are on the inside of our bodies. We as humans are the most sophisticated things living on this planet. We have a brain that is capable of creating anything we can pretty much conceive of, even computers that can think and do things much faster than we could ever do ourselves. Gee aren’t we smart! But in order for us to be able to do these things we do, the groundwork for us to do these things had already been implanted in us.
Genesis 1:26 tells us that God went on to say: “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and the domestic animals and all the earth and every moving animal that is moving upon the earth.”
So if we were made in the image of our creator this would certainly explain why we are the dominant species, and it falls right in line with what the bible states. We have a creator. Our DNA is so complex that even we “intelligent beings” can’t tell how or why all these strands of DNA work or why some of them aren’t working at all. Never the less, it does prove that our DNA had a very intelligent designer. Our voice box is unique. Our thumbs and bodies were designed differently than any other species on earth. We are the only beings to walk on two legs. We are different because we were created in the image of our creator.
Now to the spirit side of humans, things that cannot be seen, but according to the bible we hold these traits in common with our creator. The bible tells us that God has these same qualities. Galatians 5:22, in speaking of the spirit of God, it says: “The fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control.” All these qualities that humans do possess. Remember the scripture at James 2:20?
“But do you care to know O empty man, that faith works is inactive.”
If faith apart from works is inactive or dead, then activity through works must mean we can have faith or trust in God based on His works that surround us.
I hope this has helped you to look at this question, “Is God Real”, from a different perspective. I feel if you chose to follow along with this blog you may have begun to see that the bible is very simple. It has a message that is the same from the beginning to the end.
